Bankruptcy Pre-Discharge Education

LSS Financial Counseling Service is an approved provider for pre-discharge bankruptcy education classes for residents of Minnesota and Wisconsin. This education is a requirement before your bankruptcy can be discharged.

What is the focus of the class?
Bankruptcy Education sessions are 2 hours in length and include a pre- and post-test. The session focuses on developing sound financial habits to succeed with budgeting and rebuilding your credit. Participants will be given a copy of the workbook, Live a Richer Life, and will be issued a Certificate of Completion after attending.

Where and when are the classes?
In-person classes are scheduled once a month in the following locations:

  • Brainerd
  • Duluth
  • Willmar
  • Mankato

And once a month in the metro, rotating between these three locations:

  • Minneapolis
  • St Paul
  • Hopkins

The 2008 dates for in-person classes are these Tuesdays from 1-3pm in all locations:

Can I complete the class online?
Yes. We use the education product "Money in Motion" to provide online classes. You can access information on how to sign up for these classes by clicking here.

What is the fee for this service?
There is a fee of $40 per person for this service. If you are a married couple, and both are filing, you must both complete the education. Services are available for free based on a client's ability to pay, under the following circumstances: 1) if your attorney is filing pro bono; or 2) the majority of your income is from disability, and your family income is no more than 200% of Federal Poverty Level. In either case, documentation MUST be provided verifying these criteria in order for the fee to be waived.*
